Haden E. McKay Citizen of the Year Award

The Humble Area Chamber of Commerce started awarding a Citizen of the Year Award for 1967. The first recipient was John Pundt, publisher of the Humble Echo and President of the Chamber at that time.

For the next few years, the award was presented to people who performed work to enhance the community and who had also worked to assist the Chamber in its goals. While the recipient’s work during the previous year was highlighted, the award was also given for long-term contributions to the community.

Up until 1973, the award was usually presented by the President of the Chamber. Since 1973, it has been standard for the previous year’s winner to present the award. Two awards were presented in 1980 and in 1981, to a male and a female recipient.

Award Name Change - For 1985, the name of the award was changed to the Haden E. McKay, MD Citizen of the Year Award, to recognize the contributions to the community of Mayor Haden McKay. The criteria for the award did not change during the time.

Dr. C. A. Younts was the first recipient of the new award. Dr. McKay, who had received the Citizen of the Year Award for 1973, was presented with one of the new awards with his name on it.

Chamber Name Change – The Chamber changed its name from Humble Area Chamber of Commerce to Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce in 2010. The 2010 Award, presented to Nancy Shortsleeve, was the first award to include the new name of the Chamber.
